What Is A Mental Illness?

When most people hear the phrase “mental illness,” they think of hair sticking up, holes in clothes, a crazy look upon ones face, maybe even drool coming from ones mouth, and well, just someone being “crazy.” This is not a mental illness at all. A person may look completely fine on the outside, and suffer from a mental illness. A mental illness is a mental health condition that affects how one thinks, feels, and behaves. A person who suffers from a mental illness is NOT crazy, and it’s not that persons fault he or she suffers from a mental illness. No one chooses to have a mental illness. There are many different types of mental illnesses, also known as mental disorders, and some of them include: depression, eating disorders, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. There are also sub-types to these mental illnesses. A mental illness is not a choice and it can happen to anyone.
